Dear Brothers and Sisters:

I speak to you in an unprecedented time in where our lives have changed forever because of the Coronavirus.  The industry that we work in, the hospitality industry, has been impacted the most.  UNITE HERE nationwide is operating at around 15%, and some businesses have closed until June or July if not longer.  I urge many of you to use the resources that are accessible to you such as unemployment insurance, food banks, stimulus money, and etc.  LOCAL 878 has provided various ways that you can receive the assistance you need such as ways to protect yourself and acquire benefits to ease the financial strain during this trying time on our Union web page unitehere878.org as well as we encourage you to like our Facebook page  – Unite HERE Local 878 – Alaska, as we are posting daily, various information that will keep us all in touch and informed during these difficult times.

Though these are trying times, better times are ahead of us.  We will get through this and we will be better because of it.  As social distancing is recommended, emotional distancing is not encouraged.  Reach out and stay in contact with your loved ones and your Union family.  We will not be judged by how we manage the good times, but how we come together during this time of need.

UNITE HERE has insured that all members who had medical coverage in March and lost employment or hours because of the Coronavirus, their health coverage will continue for you and your registered dependents for the next three months.  Please visit UNITE Here HEALTH – ALASKA for  information.

Until we meet again, please stay safe and contact the Local if you have any questions.

Marvin Jones
Union President UNITE HERE Local 878

Ahead of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and the anniversary of King’s birthday on January 15, 2020, hotel workers honored one of the most enduring actions of the civil rights icon by launching a national consumer boycott of hotel company Columbia Sussex. Please see www.csexposed.org for further information.

Please boycott the following Anchorage hotels that are owned and operated by Columbia Sussex:

  • Marriott Downtown Anchorage
  • Hilton Garden Inn (Anchorage)
  • Hampton Inn (Anchorage)
  • Homewood Suites (Anchorage)
  • Hilton Anchorage Hotel (Anchorage)

These hotels are under boycott until Columbia Sussex signs a fair contract to provide workers at the Hilton Anchorage the wages and benefits that they deserve.
